  • Why should our taxes go up at all when our property values are going down?
Most citizens would be right to think that their property taxes should go down when their property values go down.

  • How does the average city employees salary, pension and health care contribution compare to the private sector?
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Quarterly Census of Labor and Wages Q3 2007, The average weekly wage in Troy, MI is $599, which translates to $31,148 annually.

    WAGES - Private vs. Public
Private Sector  $573 per week   $29,796 per year
Local Government  $687 per week   $35,724 per year
State Government  $933 per week   $48,516 per year
Federal Government  $859 per week  $44,668 per year

So government employees at all levels are earning more money on average than the citizens who pay those city workers wages.

  • Won't Troy continue to be the desirable city that it is, relative to other cities, when all cities are experiencing economic difficulties and making difficult decisions to pare down services?
Of course it will.  Troy will always be a desirable city with its great infrastructure, neighborhoods, schools, and facilities. We just need our local government to pare down their expenses and stop intimidating us with tax threats.

  • Is paying additional taxes a wise investment in a recession?
Not unless you are a government worker.

  • Adding more tax burden to our businesses will only increase the cost of doing business in Troy.  Why would we want to pay even more for our goods and services when we are already facing difficult economic times?
We don't, and that is why we are counting on the smart citizens of Troy to see through the smoke, mirrors, and scare tactics surrounding this ill-timed request for higher taxes.
